Fire Mitigation

The WRWC is working in phases for the Baldy Mountain Project.

√ Phase 1A has been completed

  • Phase 1B, as of early March 2026, is pending final approval from BLM. Thereafter, contractors/vendors will be determined. Some project areas with pinyon pine are restricted due to beetle activity.
  • Phase 2

As of June 3, 2025, Brad Eckert from WRWC provided:

“Yes, we signed the contract with Chipeta Archeological Services yesterday.  They will be implementing the heritage survey this summer, letting us know by the end of July whether any refinements need to be made to the Round 1B units”

As of May 30, 2025, Brad Eckert from WRWC Baldy Project provided:

“The primary update is that we anticipate signing a contract on Monday 6/2/2025 with a contractor to conduct the archeological surveys.  They will start by surveying parcels included in Round 1B, but the contract is written so we can add Round 2 parcels determined by the BLM or USDA FS archeologist to also need surveys.  Although the final archeological survey report won’t be finished until the end of August, the contractor did tell us that they would let us know by the end of July which (if any) treatment areas need adjustment.  We hope to showcase these Round 1B projects and award the vegetation treatment contract(s) for Round 1B this fall.  We hope to also lay out Round 2 this summer and potentially also showcase these projects and award these vegetation treatment contracts this fall.

As for Round 1A, we anticipate that Scott Sorensen and Brian Boden will resume operations this fall when operational restrictions are lifted October 15.”
